About 3 Low:

The play 3 Low got its name because at all times their is 3 people on the baseline. This allows the main ball handler to have space to dribble around and drive past his man. This play can be used in many scenarios. The main scenario that I use this play in though is at the end of a close game when I need to run out the clock. This play can be used against a man to man, or a zone defense. This play requires that players make repeated hard cuts which is bad on players ankles. I always tell all of my players to have a good, quality ankle brace ready at all times in case they roll their ankle, or even if it is just sore. Click Here to view what I would consider a quality ankle brace.

Setup:

3 Low is setup with the main ball handler (1) having the ball at the top of the floor in the middle of the court. The other guard (2) is in one corner behind the three point line, and one of the forwards (3) is in the other corner in the same spot. The other forward (4) is on one of the  blocks, and the center is in the middle of the floor between the free-throw line, and the three point line.

Running the Play:

To run 3 Low the center must set a screen for the main ball handler. The ball handler must then go off of the screen and dribble toward the basket, the first scoring option is for him to shoot a layup. If this is not open, he must pass the ball to the man in the corner and take his spot. The man passed to must catch the ball and then dribble back to the top and go off the same screen to the other side. While all of this is happening the man on the block has to always be on the opposite side of the ball to clear a lane for the guard to shoot a layup. If the guard does drive the man on the block can step into the lane for a short jumpshot.
